During a year dominated by a global pandemic and civil unrest, many of us find ourselves trapped on our own islands. In light of the extraordinary circumstances, Artist Montmare brings together art and nature to help heal, transcend, and transform. For four weeks, starting on December 7, 2020, take an artistic, introspective journey set against Ingmar Bergman’s cinematic landscape on the remote island Fårö, Sweden. Each week, Montmare will release overarching themes of human conditions through images of invented scenarios, rituals, and performances set against stripped down natural elements, allowing a contemplation of the rocks and sea to function as a mirror, and in reflection to see the essence of yourself.

Legendary street photographer, Joel Meyerowitz, sat down with Fotografiska New York’s Director of Exhibitions, Amanda Hajjar, for an intimate conversation to share some of the most fascinating stories from his illustrious career and to give a glimpse into his latest book, How I Make Photographs.

We’re flipping the camera on our photographers - framing them as the subjects that provoke and sustain our creative curiosity while the museum doors are temporarily closed. We’ve invited our photographers to share more about their work or tell us how the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting their lives while in isolation.

American photographer, writer and educator Stephen Frailey uses a unique format to showcase significant photographs from the 1980s to the present day in his new book, Looking at Photography, which features one work by 100 groundbreaking contemporary photographers and an accompanying text in a format inspired by John Szarkowski’s classic book Looking at Photographers. Photography-based artist, Tawny Chatmon’s exhibition Inheritance invites the viewer to look beyond the decorated and nuanced portraits to examine issues of race and the historical positioning of African American portraiture in the absence of subjugation of the “black body” in Western art. Go behind the scenes with Tawny Chatmon as she shares the inspiration behind her photography.

A call-out to photographers: we’re calling upon our community to create a series of progressive photographs, documenting our experiences and emotions throughout a period of time where the world around us has been put on pause. Every week we will announce a new theme. We are accepting photo, video and GIF submissions to be featured across our social, website, and future installations.

Following the debut of photography installation “Disrupting Fatherhood: A Movement in Equity Gender” at Fotografiska New York, the world shifted in light of the COVID-19 outbreak. Photographers and married couple Ariel and Sam Soto-Suver have augmented their original project challenging conceptions of gender around fatherhood, to now include updates from sheltering in place in the Bay Area. Working as a professional photographer for over sixty years, Larry Fink has had one-man shows at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of Modern Art amongst others. He has shown work in museums all over the world. Larry has recently exhibited a retrospective of his work at Fotografia Europea in Italy, and also had a 2019 solo show at the deCordova Sculpture Park Museum in Massachusetts and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
